Our mission

AI was trained on everything that makes us human. Our data, our history, our ingenuity. Something built from all of us should be available to all of us. That’s Klai.

The most powerful technology of our era doesn’t belong to commercial powers. It belongs to us all.

Not as a workaround. Not with a compliance asterisk attached. A hospital should be able to use AI for its clinical work without worrying about patient data crossing borders. A government agency should be able to use AI without wondering whether a foreign court can access its internal conversations. A startup in Groningen should be able to build AI-powered products without first hiring a privacy lawyer.

That is what Klai is for. We build private AI infrastructure so none of that is a trade-off anymore.

Privacy is the foundation, not a feature

Most AI tools treat privacy as a premium add-on. You pay extra, enable a compliance mode, or your legal team manages it separately. That creates a recurring question for every team that uses them: what actually happened to the data we just processed?

We build the other way. Your data stays in your environment by design. There is nothing to configure and no mode to enable. Private is not a setting. It is the starting point.

Why European infrastructure matters

Under GDPR, personal data must be processed lawfully and with appropriate protections. Under the EU AI Act, certain uses of AI require transparency and accountability. These are not obstacles. They are the right framework for AI that people can actually trust.

Most large AI platforms route data through US servers. Under the Cloud Act, US authorities can request access to that data regardless of where you are located. Your compliance team knows this. Your clients do too, if you ask them.

Klai runs on European infrastructure. If you self-host, on your servers. If you use our hosted service, on ours. The data stays on the continent.

How we are structured

Klai is steward-owned. That means the mission is always in charge. Not shareholders looking for returns. Not investors looking for an exit.

Profits go back into the company. Into better infrastructure, better products, better support. There is no pressure to optimise for a sale, because there is no mechanism for a sale. We cannot be sold. Not to a larger tech company, not to a private equity fund, not to anyone.

What we are building

We started with three products that address the most common needs:

  • Chat: private AI conversations, nothing leaves your environment
  • Focus: document analysis with your own sources
  • Scribe: private transcription on European infrastructure

Each product is built on open source foundations. The code is auditable. The infrastructure is European. Underneath all three: an OpenAI-compatible API. Organizations can connect their existing AI tools to Klai without changing their stack, and their data stays private.

But our goal is bigger. Think of what Heroku did for web development in 2009. You stopped worrying about servers, configuration, and scaling, and focused on what you actually wanted to build. That is what we are building for AI in Europe. A platform where any organization can build and deploy AI products without starting from scratch every time. Private and open to everybody by design.
