The name
Inspired by the fertile soil of our founding region, Groningen, our name is derived from the Dutch word for clay: klei.
25,000 years ago, someone picked up a handful of wet dirt and formed a bowl. Long before farming, long before cities, clay, infused with human creativity, shaped the foundation of civilization. This building block has always belonged to the people. You can build fences around fields, but the soil itself still belongs to everyone.
Just like clay, generative AI is common property. Every major foundation model was trained on the accumulated knowledge and creative work of millions of people. That’s not a proprietary dataset. That’s our shared inheritance.
That is why we exist. We provide access to the clay, the substrate. Whatever you choose to build on top of it is yours.
Your Klai. Your data. Your rules.
